CHARACTERIZATION OF THE REGION

Located in the northeast of Portugal, bordering Spain, a large part of this region is integrated in a remarkable area from an environmental point of view: the Montesinho Natural Park, with 75 thousand hectares. The entire region is made up of undulating plateaus, cut by more or less deep valleys, with altitudes ranging from 1486 meters in the Montesinho mountain range to 438 meters in the Mente river bed, with an average altitude of about 900 meters.

In terms of geology, schist rocks predominate, but granite, ultrabasic rocks and small limestone patches are also present. The climate is Mediterranean with a Continental influence, strongly conditioned by the interior and the altitude, with large temperature variations, from -12 degrees C in winter to +40 degrees C in summer.

Among the abundant fauna there are the iberian wolf (Canis lupus signatus), deer (Cervus elaphus hispanicus), water mole (Galemys pyrenaicus), the wildcat (Felis silvestris), the golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos) and the black stork (Ciconia nigra).

The flora is very varied, with endemic species such as Armeria eriophylla, rare species such as the violets Viola bubanii and Viola hirta and wild orchids such as Cephalanthera rubra and Epipactis phyllanthes.

During the mycological outings it will be possible to visit several forest habitats consisting of Quercus pyrenaica, Castanea sativa, Quercus rotundifolia and some softwood forests (Pinus pinaster and Pinus sylvestris). Outside the Park we have forests of Quercus faginea and Quercus suber. With great mycological importance, there are also riparian forests (river banks), with Fraxinus angustifolia, Alnus glutinosa and Populus nigra, etc.

We can also visit meadows or marshes with spontaneous herbaceous vegetation and areas of scrubland, with a shrub cover consisting mainly of Cistus ladanifer, Cytisus sp., Erica sp. and Genista tridentata.
